چکیده

Abstract This paper studies the morpho-semantics of a particular class scalar focus adverbs called Superlative Modifiers (SMs). One key feature these is that they bear degree morphology, along with gradable adjectives involved. Most analyses SMs in market do not take into consideration semantic contributions their morphology. However, cross-linguistic facts strongly suggest morphological makeup cannot simply be linguistic coincidence. Thus, have posed long-standing and intriguing morpho-semantic puzzle: Why morphologically involve quantity adjective (Q-adjective) superlative morpheme? What role Q-adjectives morpheme inside SMs? How are pieces connected semantics? dedicated to questions by focusing on two expressions Mandarin SMs, zui-duo zui-shao (which consist only zui duo ‘many/much’ or shao ‘few/little’), presents decompositional analysis both as modified superlatives. If proposed right track, it shows insights tools developed gradability ( Kennedy 1999 ) can applied those scalarity. Recently, Greenberg 2016 ; 2017 has argued for gradability-based semantics English even . contributes this growing research agenda, through detailed case study but bearing morphology adjectives. Moreover, also deepens our understanding Q-adjectives. By studying measured domain need structured part-of relation, rather natural ordering relevant domain. Crucially, updated view Wellwood’s 2014 2015 leads us differential uses ultimately unified account

Superlative Modifiers as Modified Superlatives

The superlative modifiers at least and at most are quite famous, but their cousins at best, at the latest, at the highest, etc., are less well-known. This paper is devoted to the entire family. New data is presented illustrating the productivity of the pattern, identifying a generalization delimiting it, and showing that the cousins, too, have the pragmatic effects that have attracted so much a...

Superlative carotenoids.

A selection of carotenoids beyond normal appearance or properties has been presented at the 16(th) International Symposium on Carotenoids. Some of the exceptional compounds shown at the conference cannot be reproduced in this proceeding since they have not yet been published. In addition, editorial space limitation does not allow illustrating all of the previously mentioned carotenoids.

Most Meanings Are Superlative

Recent research on the semantics of quantificational expressions has taken on the task of relating the truth-conditional import of quantifiers with their impact on verification procedures. In particular, the semantic analysis and verification procedures associated with the proportional quantifier most have been studied in a variety of ways in an effort to reveal the correct semantic analysis of...

Superlative quantifiers and epistemic interpretation of disjunction

We discuss semantics of superlative quantifiers at most n and at least n. We argue that the meaning of a quantifier is a pair specifying a verification and a falsification condition for sentences with this quantifier. We further propose that the verification condition of superlative quantifiers should be interpreted in an epistemic way, that is as a conjunctive list of possibilities. We also pr...
